SMART Secretary-Treasurer in Illinois Pleads Guilty to Records Fraud

On January 17, Edward Cranston, former secretary-treasurer of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) Local 1421, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to one count of filing a false financial report to the U.S. Department of Labor for the purpose of concealing $28,220 in funds he had stolen from the Beecher (Will County), Ill.-based union. Secretary of SMART Local in Washington State Sentenced

Considering what he stole, Gregory Normand should be feeling a bit lucky. On December 4, Normand, former secretary-treasurer of Local 324 of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART), Transportation Division, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington to 18 months in prison for embezzling funds from the Marysville, Wash.-based union. He also was ordered to pay $217,260 in restitution. Normand had been indicted in October 2017 for embezzling $443,000, and had pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement and two counts of making false statements this past July. The actions follow an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Former Bookkeeper for SMART Local in Tulsa Sentenced

On July 23, Deborah Hand, former bookkeeper for Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) Local 270, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma to three months of incarceration, five months of home confinement and three years of supervised release for embezzling funds from the Tulsa-based union. She also was ordered to pay $44,808 in restitution and a $100 special assessment. Hand had pleaded guilty on July 31 after being charged a week earlier in a one-count information. SMART Secretary-Treasurer in Washington State Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement, Concealment

On July 13, Gregory Normand, former secretary-treasurer of International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) Local 324, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington to one count of embezzling over $248,000 in funds from the Marysville (near Everett) union and two counts of making false statements in union financial records to conceal the thefts.
