The National Legal and Policy Center is preparing to file complaints with both the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the House Ethics Committee over Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) apparent misuse of campaign contributions for personal psychiatric treatment.
FEC records show AOC’s campaign paid Boston-based psychiatrist Dr. Brian Boyle nearly $19,000 in 2025 for services listed as “leadership training and consulting.” Dr. Boyle, chief psychiatric officer at the Stella Group, specializes in ketamine therapy as well as treatment for depression, anxiety, and narcissistic personality disorders.
Paul Kamenar, counsel for NLPC, stated that using campaign funds for personal mental health treatment clearly violates federal election laws and House ethics rules prohibiting personal use of campaign money.
“This is not a legitimate campaign expense,” said Kamenar. “If Representative Ocasio-Cortez needs psychiatric care, she should pay for it with her own money—not with donations from supporters who thought they were contributing to her political campaign.”
This is not the first time AOC has drawn scrutiny for questionable campaign spending. Her campaign also paid over $2,000 to a high-end celebrity makeup and hair styling agency for services at campaign events, despite the congresswoman previously posting a video tutorial teaching supporters how to do their own makeup.
Kamenar noted the irony: “She asks small-dollar donors for $5 contributions, then turns around and spends thousands on expensive makeup artists and psychiatric services. Her constituents deserve better.”
NLPC will file a joint complaint with the FEC and House Ethics Committee demanding an investigation into these expenditures and appropriate enforcement action.
NLPC continues its mission to promote ethics and accountability in government by challenging the misuse of public and campaign resources.
