“Socialist Takeover?” GOP Ramps Up Alarms as Mamdani Win Becomes Rallying Cry Against Democrats

Originally reported by ABC News

Washington, D.C. — At the annual Faith and Freedom Coalition summit, top Republican leaders wasted no time zeroing in on the Democratic Party’s latest problem child: Zohran Mamdani. The 33-year-old Democratic Socialist who just toppled former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral primary is being branded by Republicans as the radical face of the modern left — and for good reason.

Mamdani’s win didn’t just send shockwaves through New York — it ignited a firestorm nationwide.

“He’s a communist,” said President Trump at a press conference Friday. “A 100% Communist Lunatic… companies looking to invest in the U.S. are worried. This is a terrible thing for our country.”

Trump wasn’t alone. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin told the summit crowd:

“They nominated a mayoral candidate who would make Bernie Sanders blush.”
“The progressive left won’t stop — and that’s why we can’t stop either.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) quickly connected Mamdani’s platform to the national Democratic Party, warning voters that Democrats are increasingly aligned with fringe, socialist ideology.

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), who served alongside Mamdani in Albany, was blunt:

“New York Democrats will pay the price for this insanity at the ballot box.”

Mamdani’s Platform: Tax, Spend, and Control

Mamdani’s campaign reads like a Marxist wish list:

  • Tax hikes on businesses and the wealthy

  • Government-run grocery stores

  • Free public buses

  • Expanded public housing

  • A sweeping redistribution of city resources with little regard for fiscal reality

Even Democrats are hesitating. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Chuck Schumer, both New Yorkers, stopped short of endorsing Mamdani. Some suburban Democrats outright rejected him, calling his views “too extreme.”

Foreign Policy Firestorm

Mamdani has been heavily criticized for his inflammatory remarks on Israel, accusing the Jewish state of “genocide” and defending the phrase “globalize the intifada.” While Mamdani now claims to support Israel’s right to exist with “equal rights,” his past rhetoric — including likening Palestinian uprisings to heroic resistance — has alarmed Jewish communities and centrists alike.

RNC Chair Michael Whatley drove the point home:

“This is where the Democrats are going: open borders, inflationary spending, weak America.”

Citizenship Questions and Identity Politics

Some Republicans are questioning Mamdani’s rapid rise, including Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), who requested a DOJ investigation into Mamdani’s citizenship and naturalization application. Mamdani, born in Uganda and a U.S. citizen since 2018, called the scrutiny bigoted.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took it further, posting a meme of the Statue of Liberty in a burqa. That drew sharp rebukes from Muslim Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, André Carson, and others, who accused critics of racism and Islamophobia.

Even Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) — a Mamdani opponent — defended him on this point, writing,

“Every decent person should speak out against the despicable Islamophobic attacks directed at him.”

But Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed pointed out the obvious:

“There’s more than enough material on this guy. His policy record speaks for itself.”

The Bigger Problem for Democrats

Whether Democrats want him or not, Mamdani is now helping define the party. If he wins in November, he becomes the de facto national face of Democratic urban governance — and Republicans are preparing to make that case from coast to coast.

Even Democrat Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) admitted:

“He represents a new generation focused on the economy, cost of living, and kitchen table issues… whether you agree with him or not, that message is working.”

Our Take:

Mamdani may be the new darling of the radical left, but his ideas are toxic to anyone who believes in freedom, capitalism, and American strength.

His victory in a deep-blue city is being sold as a grassroots triumph — but the truth may be much darker.
Who’s bankrolling Mamdani? Who’s advising him? What are his real allegiances — ideological, financial, and foreign?
