Disbarment Sought of Virginia AG Candidate Jay Jones

National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) has filed a complaint with the Virginia State Bar asking that it subject Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones “to a revocation of his bar license or at the least a suspension.”

In text messages sent in 2022, Jones advocated the killing of Todd Gilbert, the then Speaker of the House of Delegates; expressed his desire that Gilbert’s wife should experience her children dying in her arms; and that he would like to “piss on the graves” of his former Republican colleagues in the House of Delegates.

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger has refused to ask Jones to withdraw from the race, adding fuel to the national debate over violence in politics. Jones is scheduled to face the incumbent Republican, Jason Miyares, in a debate on Thursday night at the University of Richmond in partnership with the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Section.

The complaint also asks that the Bar “investigate and discipline” Jones in regard to the community service he purportedly performed as a penalty for a reckless driving conviction in 2024. Jones was convicted of speeding 116 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 64. From the complaint:

In particular, there are serious questions as to whether his alleged 1,000 hours of community service to two organizations with which he was closely affiliated, including Meet our Moment, a registered political action committee, even qualified for community service as a charitable organization, let alone how and whether he completed 1,000 hours of service. This matter, which may also violate Rule 8.4 (e), is also currently being investigated by the New Kent County prosecutor.

NLPC Counsel Paul Kamenar, who drafted the complaint, told Andrew Kerr of the Washington Free Beacon:

Jay Jones should be disbarred for his outrageous, violent rhetoric. And even if he should be elected attorney general, he would be prohibited from carrying out his legal duties if he were disbarred or his license suspended.
