Soros Champions Free Speech But Funds Pro-Censorship Groups

From an Open Society Foundations post on X:

Attempts to silence speech undermine our democracy and harm all Americans. We’ve signed a letter with 120+ organizations to stand for this fundamental freedom. The recent murders of Charlie Kirk and Melissa Hortman have no place in our democracy.

In light of Soros’ bankrolling pro-censorship groups, this is rich.

And to sign on to a letter referencing Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman is bizarre. In the automobile of Hortman’s murderer were found “No Kings” flyers, related to anti-Trump demonstrations by Soros-funded groups like Indivisible and MoveOn.

Soros helps fund the Global Disinformation Index, Inc. (GDI). It is a London-based nonprofit that compiled a media blacklist for advertisers that just happened to be all conservative outlets, including New York Post, the Federalist, the American Conservative, One America News, and the Washington Examiner. According to the OSF “Awards Granted” database, Disinformation Index, Inc. received a $250,000 grant “to educate the public about disinformation and its harms” in the United States.

In May 2023, NLPC Counsel Paul Kamenar filed an 11-page complaint against GDI’s America affiliate, Disinformation Index, Inc., with the IRS detailing a multitude of violations of IRS disclosure rules, including a failure to disclose funding sources, hiding officers’ identities, and paying excessive executive compensation to its president.

Soros has also been a funder of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a major pro-censorship group that sponsors the so-called International Fact-Checking Network. Like GDI, Poynter compiled a list of “unreliable” news sources that contained mostly conservatives. It was forced to apologize after admitting that its methodology was flawed. According to the OSF database, Poynter has received a half million.

Two million dollars went to a Brussels-based nonprofit called Aspiration “to ensure effective enforcement of Social Media Accountability Rules during the 2024 EU (European Union) Elections in order to reduce and mitigate the spread of disinformation.” These rules were promulgated under the EU’s Digital Service Act, which was enacted in February 2024 in response to Elon Musk making X a “free speech” platform. Thousands of pieces of content were removed, virtually all posted by conservative commentators and politicians. Aspiration also receives funding from the EU itself, undercutting any claim of independence or neutrality.

Last year, Soros provided $650,000 to the Washington, D.C.-based Reset Tech Action, which has been called the “censorship lobby.” Reset Tech advocates for restrictive rules on Big Tech platforms, disproportionately targeted at conservatives.

These instances of Soros support for censorship are not comprehensive. There are more.

For years, the so-called Open Society Foundations have led a charmed existence, insulated from criticism, but those days are ending. Its Chair, the 39-year-old Alex Soros, who has never held a job outside his father’s businesses and foundations, is ill-equipped to deal with the impending storm of scrutiny. When multi-billion-dollar mega-funds can engage in such rank dishonesty and hypocrisy about free speech, the storm is only going to get bigger.
