Chuck Ross reports in the Washington Free Beacon:
The Congressional Black Caucus is boosting a boycott effort against retail giant Target for ending its DEI initiatives, a rollback that included the termination of a corporate sponsorship program that has been lucrative for the caucus’s nonprofit arm.
Also from the story:
“The Congressional Black Caucus threat of a boycott after Target ended financial support has all the earmarks of a shakedown,” said Peter Flaherty, Chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative watchdog group. “CEO Brian Cornell has always been an easy mark for racial activists,” added Flaherty, who noted the Target leader met earlier this year with MSNBC host and activist Al Sharpton regarding a potential boycott.
It was a mistake for Cornell to meet Al Sharpton and it is now a mistake for him to now meet with the CBC. He is giving them more attention that they deserve. They are simply incapable of launching the same kind of social media-based boycott that conservatives have mounted in recent years. Their boycott threat is a bluff.
Remember, a far-larger group of consumers are already boycotting Target because of the ”tuck friendly” Pride merchandise two years ago and the bathroom controversy that preceded it. Cornell has never repudiated Target’s policies. He has ridiculously blamed his own middle-class customers for being a physical threat to his store clerks as the reason for toning down the Pride displays.
Let’s also remember that it was Cornell who initiated a $100 million program to promote “equity,” helping to provide the moral basis for the rash of shoplifting and organized theft that have hurt Target’s earnings.
