John T. Daley for four years embezzled nearly $1.2 million from the New York State Nurses Association, the 34,000-member union of which he had been chief financial officer. Now he’s going to pay a price. On March 30, Daley received a prison sentence in Albany County Court of three-and-a-third years to 10 years. He also will have to make restitution. Daley pleaded guilty in January to second-degree grand larceny, after initially claiming innocence due to impaired judgment from overuse of prescription drugs. The sentencing follows an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and the police department of the Town of Colonie, located north of Albany. (OLMS, 4/23/07).
Business Manager of Texas Local Indicted for Embezzlement
On April 3, William I. Brown, former business manager of United Association of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 237, based in Texarkana, was indicted on eight counts of embezzling more than $86,500 in union and apprenticeship funds. The indictment follows an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Benefits Securities Administration, Office of Inspector General, and Office of Labor-Management Standards. Ohio Local President Indicted for Embezzlement
On April 4, Ronald Schweitzer, former president of Local 1967 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union, was indicted in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio on one count of embezzling union funds during 2002-05 in the amount of $58,305.30. Ex-Philadelphia Boss Charged with Theft, Conspiracy
On April 14, Gerard Groom, former president of Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union Local 1034, was charged in First Judicial District of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia County Court, with various offenses in connection with his embezzlement of $13,040 in funds belonging to the union, an affiliate of the United Food & Commercial Workers. He is accused of one count each of theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception, failure to make required disposition of funds received, access device fraud, and conspiracy. (OLMS, 4/23/07).
Former President of Philadelphia-Area Union Sentenced
On April 4, Derek Baldwin, former president of the Workers Independent Union, was sentenced in Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Montgomery County Court, to five years probation and ordered to pay $8,200 in restitution after having pled guilty. He had been charged last August with theft by deception, tampering with records, forgery, and receipt of stolen property in connection with his theft of $12,700 in union funds. (OLMS, 4/23/07).
Illinois President Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement, Cover-Up
On April 11, Jeffrey Hohlbauch, ex-president of Local 3600 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois to one count of willfully making false entries in union financial records to conceal his embezzlement of more than $5,000 in funds. The local is based in Alton, Ill., in the St. Louis area. (OLMS, 4/23/07).
Former Employee of International Union in Kansas Charged
On April 4, the District Court of Wyandotte County, Kansas, issued a warrant charging Carl Oliver, a former employee of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, with two counts of theft and one count of forgery associated with the loss of $4,432.67 in union funds. The union is based in Kansas City, Kansas. (OLMS, 4/23/07).
Office Manager in Alaska Sentenced for False Record-Keeping
On April 6, Kathy Schurosky, former office manager for Piledrivers and Divers Local 2520, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to six months probation and a special assessment of $25 for making false entries in union financial records. She previously had made full restitution in the amount of $3,397.86. Schurosky pled guilty in April 2006. The statewide Alaska union is an affiliate of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. (OLMS, 4/23/07).
Oklahoma President Pleads Guilty to Record-Keeping Offenses
On April 4, Nathaniel Marc Greene, ex-president of American Federation of Government Employees Local 2562 in Oklahoma City, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma to one count of making a false statement in union records. The guilty plea follows a joint investigation by the Departments of Labor and Veterans Affairs. (OLMS, 4/23/07).
