On June 30, William Harry Good, Jr., former financial secretary-treasurer of Machinists Local Lodge 821, was charged in U.S. District Court, Central District of California, with embezzling $1,500 in union funds. But in this case, a little smoke has revealed a lot of fire. The sum represents just one of 229 union checks, collectively worth more than $192,000, that Good allegedly misappropriated. The indictment comes after a joint investigation by the Department of Labor’s Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) and its Office of Inspector General. (OLMS, 7/21).
Nebraska Ex-Treasurer Sentenced for Embezzlement
On July 7, in U.S. District Court for Nebraska, Terry L. Gloe, former treasurer for Local 11 of the American Postal Workers Union, was sentenced to six months imprisonment to be followed by three years of supervised release, with a special condition of six months of home confinement. He also must make $113,377 in restitution payments. Back in February Gloe had pleaded guilty to embezzling local funds. (OLMS, 7/21).
Ex-Local Treasurer in St. Louis Pleads Guilty
Duane John Raab, 46, formerly secretary-treasurer and business agent for Iron Workers Local 518, pleaded guilty in federal court to one felony count of embezzlement. Raab had used his position to steal more than $25,000 from the union. Sentencing was set for October 7. (Associated Press, 7/15).
NYC Bookkeeper Gets Probation for Embezzlement
On June 28, in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, Chris Byron, ex-bookkeeper for Laborers Local 78, was sentenced to one year of probation for embezzling $20,928 in union funds during the period March-October 2003. (OLMS, 7/21).
Former Secretary-Treasurer in Washington State Indicted
On July 6, Robert W. Watson, formerly the secretary-treasurer for Local 8-748 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE) was indicted for embezzling $7,325 in union funds. The charge follows an investigation by the Department of Labor. (OLMS, 7/21).
Ohio Business Manager Charged with Filing False Report
On June 28, Russell J. Liming, business manager-financial secretary of Sheet Metal Workers Local 183, was charged with one count of filing a false report. (OLMS, 7/21).
Secretary-Treasurer in N.J. Pleads Guilty to Hiding Records
On June 29, Anthony Marro, former secretary-treasurer for Local 518 of the Service Employees International Union, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, New Jersey District, to one count of failure to retain union records. The guilty plea follows a Labor Department investigation (OLMS, 7/21).
