Sharpton’s Tax Problems Get More Scrutiny

I was a guest this morning on Fox & Friends to discuss Al Sharpton’s longstanding practice of not paying his taxes. Here’s the video:

The discussion was prompted by an article on National Review Online by Jillian Kay Melchior that reports that each and every for-profit Sharpton entity has been shut down by authorities in at least one jurisdiction for failing to pay taxes.

Melchior’s story confirms a pattern also seen with his nonprofit groups and his political campaigns: Sharpton does not pay his bills.

Sharpton has run what are akin to “bust out” schemes. Sharpton takes in money for a project or cause. He lives lavishly on the cash flow, and then creditors, including taxation authorities, are left holding the bag.

Sharpton’s for-profit, nonprofit and political enterprises have always been hopelessly intertwined and conflated, often in violation of the law, …

Sharpton’s Shakedowns Get Scrutiny

Getting attention is our request that Walmart and other big companies stop funding Al Sharpton and his organization, the National Action Network (NAN), in the wake of the police murders in New York City. On January 5, I was a guest on “Fox and Friends” on the Fox News Channel.

I was also a guest on Money With Melissa Francis on the Fox Business Network.

Additionally, I was interviewed on CBS Insider, a syndicated TV program, and I was a guest on several radio shows.

On September 4, the New York Post published a front-page story on Sharpton’s shakedowns. From the article:

Al Sharpton has enriched himself and NAN for years by threatening companies with bad publicity if they didn’t come to terms with him. Put simply, Sharpton specializes in shakedowns,” said Ken Boehm, chairman of the National Legal & Policy Center, a Virginia-based watchdog group that has produced a

VIDEO: Tax Money Wasted on EV Recharging Stations That Don’t Work

NLPC Associate Fellow Paul Chesser was a guest on the Willis Report on Fox Business Network last night. Here’s a transcript:

Gerri Willis: Well, onto electric cars. Uncle Sam is back to doing what it does best – wasting your taxpayer dollars. Over one hundred and thirty million granted to a California company to build a network of electric car chargers in major cities. Chargers, our next guest says, may not even work for electric cars. Joining me now, Paul Chesser, associate fellow for the National Legal and Policy Center. What are you talking about? These charge centers won’t even work?

Paul Chesser: Well, it depends on what kind of car you have, Gerri. There are three different technologies out there, there is the Japanese, which this particular boondoggle happens to work with, there is another one that most …

EPA Regulations Responsible for Eco-Boost Engine Problems

NLPC Associate Fellow Mark Modica was interviewed on the Willis Report on May 28, 2013. Here’s a transcript:

Gerri Willis: Federal government finally, finally revving up an investigation into the Ford F150 pickup trucks with Eco-Boost engines. Now if you watch this show you would have known this was coming because earlier this month we reported consumer complaints about Eco-Boost engines. They shake or lose power during acceleration. That is a complaint. But little has been done about it from Ford or the federal government, for that matter. With more on this Mark Modica associate fellow at the National Legal and Policy Center. Mark, welcome to the show. You know, we’ve talking about this for a long time. Why is the federal government been so slow to act?

Mark Modica: Hi, Gerri. Well, I don’t know. There have been about a hundred complaints. As you said, the vehicles …

EV Automaker Tesla Makes Profit— Off Taxpayers

NLPC Associate Fellow Paul Chesser was a guest last night on the Willis Report on Fox Business Network. Here’s a transcript:Gerri Willis: Unbelievable story. Well, meanwhile in the electric car world the Tesla company is set to announce the company’s first-ever quarterly profit this week, Wednesday. But reportedly what is driving this company into the black are California tax credits. That’s right. With more on this, Paul Chesser of the National Legal Policy Center. All right. How is it possible that this company is making money only because of tax credits? Is that your analysis, Paul?

Paul Chesser: Well, that’s what it looks like. In California they’ve got a unique economy in California where they set up these special deals for renewable energy, for electric cars, for manufacturers. And they get these credits. It is likely sort of a …

VIDEO: Green Technology Hobbling Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner?

NLPC Associate Fellow Paul Chesser was a guest last night on the Willis Report on Fox Business Network. Here’s a transcript:

Gerri Willis: The recent string of battery fires on Boeing 787 Dreamliners could be traced to one thing says my next guest. You can simply point the finger at the government’s obsession with pushing green energy. Paul Chesser, associate fellow at the National Legal and Policies Center joins me now. Paul, welcome back to the show. You know, it occurred to me that we are reporting on this Boeing story all wrong. All the reporting just talks about the fires. It never goes back to this idea that companies like Boeing are being pushed very hard by governments all over the world to make these green products. Whether they are ready for the market or not.

Paul Chesser: Right. …

CNN Looks at Threats to Office of Congressional Ethics

I was interviewed in a report that aired last night by Scott Bronstein, Joe Johns, and Rahel Solomon of CNN’s Special Investigations Unit. The text of this very well done story appears below. One point not made in the report is that without the Office of Congressional Ethics, our exposé of Rep. Charles Rangel’s acceptance of corporate-funded Caribbean junkets may have been ignored.

In November 2008, NLPC President Peter Flaherty tagged along on a Rangel trip to sunny St. Maarten. He snapped photos and made audio recordings evidencing that big corporations like Citigroup, in violation of House Rules, underwrote the festivities. Based on media coverage we generated, OCE took up the case. It produced a detailed report based on Flaherty’s materials, and referred it to the Ethics Committee for action.  The Ethics Committee “admonished” Rangel who was soon after forced to resign his Ways and Means Chairmanship.
