President of CWA Affiliate in New York City Sentenced

Times Square at night On January 5, Wayne Mitchell, former longtime president of Communications Workers of America Local 14170, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to two years in federal prison to be followed by three years supervised release for embezzling funds from the New York City union, also known as Mailers Local 6, which represents mailroom employees at several area daily newspapers. He also will have to pay restitution in the amount of $373,555. Mitchell pleaded guilty in April 2010. During October 2004-May 2008, prosecutors charged, he wrote himself about $250,000 worth of payroll checks to himself and diverted more than $100,000 in union funds for personal expenses. Mitchell's successor, Larry DeAngelis, also pled guilty last April to embezzling some $60,000 in union funds.

But his tenure surely was too brief for his liking. On July 21, DeAngelis was sentenced in Manhattan federal court to a year in prison and fined $3,000 for stealing more than $60,000 from the union, which represents print shop and mailroom employees at several New York City-area daily newspapers, including the New York Times and the New York Post. He had pleaded guilty in April following a Labor Department investigation.

The union, which represents several hundred print shop and mailroom employees at several New York City-area daily newspapers, including the New York Times and the New York Post, now can count its former president and interim administrator as admitted embezzlers. On Wednesday, April 21 Wayne Mitchell pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to embezzling more than $200,000 from the union, also known as Mailers Local 6, which he'd led for decades before his ouster a couple years ago. Two days later on April 23, his appointed successor, Larry DeAngelis, pleaded guilty to stealing $60,000 from the union. Each faces a maximum of five years in prison.

NYC Newspaper Mailers Ex-Local President Charged with Embezzlement

Newspaper truckIt's the second time within a few months that the head of a newspaper back shop operations union in New York City has been charged with theft. It might soon be known as a trend. On December 14, Wayne Mitchell, former president of Local 14170 of the Communications Workers of America, also known as Mailers Local 6, was charged in Manhattan federal court with embezzling more than a quarter million dollars from his union over roughly three and a half years. Mitchell until May 2008 headed the 700-member union, whose members work at printing plants of the New York Times, the New York Post and the New York Daily News, facilities that also handle shipping for the Wall Street Journal, the Newark Star-Ledger and a Spanish-language daily, El Diario. Released on $100,000 bail on December 18, he faces up to five years in prison.
