Dispatcher for Las Vegas Laborers Local Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

Las Vegas strip at nightOn September 19, Aundrea Valerio, former dispatcher for Laborers International Union of North America Local 872, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada to two counts of embezzling funds from the Las Vegas union. She had been indicted in April 2010 with two other local office employees, Stacy Johnson and Aurora Rios, in a scheme that netted the defendants a combined $225,000, a sum later raised by prosecutors to $320,000. Valerio's share was $13,500. Johnson was found guilty by a jury this past April and sentenced to a year in prison. Rios pleaded guilty that month and awaits sentencing. In addition to sentencing, the defendants must make restitution. The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Las Vegas Laborers Local Office Employee Sentenced for Thefts

Last Thursday, August 23, Johnson, a cashier for Laborers International Union of North America Local 872, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada to a year in prison for embezzling funds from the Las Vegas union. She also will have to pay $53,500 in restitution. Johnson, along with two other office employees, had been indicted in April 2010 following an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards. She was convicted by a jury this past April and must report to prison by November 21.

Two Office Employees of Las Vegas LIUNA Local Guilty of Theft, Records Fraud

LIUNA logoOn April 4, Stacy Johnson, former cashier for Laborers International Union of North America Local 872, was found guilty by a jury in U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada of seven counts of embezzlement and three counts of falsifying union records in connection with the theft of $320,000 from the Las Vegas union. Six days later, on April 10, another Local 872 office employee, Aurora Rios, pleaded guilty to 21 counts of embezzlement and three counts of records fraud. The pair, along with another local office employee, Aundrea Valerio, had been indicted in 2010 for embezzlement totaling about $225,000. Valerio is being tried separately. Johnson and Rios are set for sentencing in August. The actions follow an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Valerio, Johnson and Rios, respectively, were charged with thefts of approximately $13,500, $45,500 and $167,500. The indictments follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.
