Ex-Local President in Texas Sentenced, Fined

On March 6, Cindy Wright, formerly president of Local 1298 of the American Federation of Government Employees, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas to 24 months in prison and was ordered to pay approximately $32,000 in restitution to the Ft. Worth-based union.  She had pleaded guilty in October to one count of making false statements of material fact.  The guilty plea and sentencing follow an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General.  (OLMS, 4/4/06).

Wisconsin Ex-Local President Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

On January 13, Rebecca Bandt, ex-president of Local 717 of the United Food & Commercial Workers, pled guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of embezzling union funds totaling more than $14,000.  She had been indicted on a variety of charges in September.  The guilty plea follows an investigation by the Labor Department.  (OLMS, 2/3).

 

Ex-Local Chieftain in Madison, Wisconsin Pleads Guilty

Mike Rice’s fall from grace was swift.  On September 19, Rice, ex-president of UFCW Local 538 in Madison, pleaded guilty in federal court to embezzling $30,211 from the union.  He filed false expense vouchers over several years, even as he led members in a bitter strike against the Tyson Foods plant in Jefferson.  The 2,200-member local also represents workers at Oscar Meyer (Madison) and Jones Dairy Farm (Fort Atkinson).  His sentence could include up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.<
