Former Officials of Philadelphia Local Plead Guilty to Thefts

On June 11 and 12, Lawrence Marable and Deborah Powell, respectively, the former president and treasurer of American Federation of Government Employees Local 1793, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania to one count of conspiracy, five counts of property theft, and one count of making a false statement.  Marable and Powell had conspired to convert $184,129.85 in dues and union checks for their personal use.  The local represents employees at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia.  The guilty pleas follow a joint investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of Inspector General.  (OLMS, 7/5/07).   

 

Michigan Local Treasurer Secretary Sentenced for Theft

Secretary-Treasurer in Chicago Area Indicted for Embezzlement

On March 8, Keith H. Cook, former secretary-treasurer for United Transportation Union Local 620, was indicted in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois for embezzling more than $48,000 in union funds and making a false entry in union records.  Local 620 represents employees of the Burlington Santa Fe Railway in Cicero, Illinois.  (OLMS, 3/30/07). 

 

Michigan Secretary-Treasurer Sentenced for Cover-up of Thefts

Former Montana Treasurer Sentenced for Embezzlement

Michael Kennedy no longer will have his union to pay for personal expenses.  On February 1, the former secretary-treasurer for Local 720 of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to five years probation for embezzling $15,612.81.  Kennedy, 46, had written 84 unauthorized union checks to himself, cash and third parties during October 22, 2003-March 22, 2005.  Court records state he also forged the names of other officials of the Butte, Montana local, and made false entries in its books to conceal the thefts.  The thefts were discovered when nine of the checks bounced.  Kennedy pleaded guilty last fall.  (Associated Press, 2/2/07).
