Ex-Ofc. Secy. Charged with Embezzlement in Ore.

On July 28, in the U.S. Dist. Ct. for Oregon, Joy Torrance, former ofc. secy. of Local 1094 of the United Bhd. Of Carpenters, was indicted for embezzling approximately $39,881 in union funds.  The charge alleged that she wrote unauthorized pay checks to herself and third parties from the union’s checking, savings and money market accounts.  The charge further alleged that Torrance used the union’s business credit card without authorization.  The indictment follows an investigation by the Seattle Dist. Ofc. of the U.S. Ofc. of Labor-Mgmt. Standards. [OLMS, 8/12/04]


Ex-Treasurer Pleads Guilty in Ark. State Court

John Steele Price pled guilty on Aug. 13 to stealing more than $15,000 from Local 884 of the United Steel Wrkrs. Union in an Ark. Court.  Based on his plea agreement, Price will serve 1 yr. in jail.  He has already repaid $15,362 to the union.

Former President Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement in Ky. Fed. Court

On April 9, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Timothy Aldridge, former president of Florence Steelworkers Local 1, pled guilty to one count of embezzling $112,525 in union funds.  Aldridge had been indicted on April 9, 2003, following an investigation by the Cincinnati District Office of the U.S. Ofc. of Labor Mgmt. Ex-President Confesses to Embezzlement in Conn. Fed. Court

On April 29, in the U.S. District Court for Connecticut, Alan Cahill, former president of Local 745 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chem. & Energy union, pled guilty to a one-count indictment charging him with embezzling $9,582 in union funds.  He had been indicted on January 26, following an investigation by the New Haven Resident Office of the U.S. Ofc. of Labor Mgmt. Madison Square Garden Raided as State Police Investigate Union Corruption

N.Y. state troopers raided Madison Square Garden (MSG) on Jan. 27, removing documents as well as cash from a private home.  MSG officials kicked out several people — Jim Arneman, the head of bldg. operations, chief electrician John O’Hara and chief stagehand Franklin DeSavino — who were also suspended from their jobs.  Law enforcement sources say that the investigation is focusing on possible no-show jobs arranged by the local affiliate of the Intl. Alliance of Theatrical & Stage Employees, and bid-rigging by officials of the electrical union. [New York Post, 2/12/04]


Ex-Secy.-Treasurer Sentenced for Falsification in Nev. Fed. Court

On Jan. 30, in the U.S. District Court for Nev., Tim Egan, frmr. bus. mgr. and secy.-treasurer of Local 3 of the Intl. Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers, was sentenced to four months of home detention with electronic monitoring and 24 months of probation.
