Ohio Secretary-Treasurer Sentenced for Thefts, False Entries

On July 10, Betty Illig, former secretary-treasurer for Graphic Communications International Union Local 638-S and the Tri-State District Joint Council, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to serve five years supervised release, one year of which must be spent in home confinement, serve 200 hours of community service, and pay $145,675 in restitution for embezzling union funds and submitting false records.  She pleaded guilty in February.  The local is located in East Liverpool, south of Youngstown.  The sentencing follows an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and Office of Inspector General.  (OLMS, 7/16/08).

Ohio Secretary-Treasurer Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

On February 8, Betty Illig, former secretary-treasurer for Graphic Communications International Union Local 638-S and the Tri-State District Joint Council, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to embezzling $145,675 in union funds and covering up the thefts by submitting false information on the union’s financial reporting forms.  Illig, a resident of East Liverpool, Ohio, a half-hour drive south of Youngstown, had been indicted last November.  The local is also based in East Liverpool.  (OLMS, 2/19/07; other sources).

Betty Illig had gone bankrupt.  Her bigger mistake was trying to climb her way out at the expense of her union.  Late in November, a federal grand jury in Cleveland indicted Illig, former secretary treasurer of Graphic Communications International Union Local 638-S and the Tri-State District Joint Council, for embezzling $145,675 and falsifying union financial reporting forms.  Her alleged thefts occurred from January 4, 2000 until May 8, 2004.  Illig, 64, a resident of East Liverpool, Ohio, about a half-hour drive south of the Youngstown area, had filed for bankruptcy in November 2000.  The local also is based in East Liverpool.  The international union has been affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters since early 2005.  (Vindy.com, 11/24/07).
