Upstate New York Steelworkers Financial Secretary Pleads Guilty

Steelworkers logoOn May 22, William Mochrie, former financial secretary for United Steelworkers Local 28, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York to making false entries in records of the Castleton, N.Y. (near Albany) union. He has agreed to make restitution in the amount of $13,763.05. Mochrie had been charged on May 8. The charge and guilty plea follow an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Steelworkers Secretary-Treasurer in Tennessee Sentenced for Theft

Steelworkers logoOn May 21, Clarence Howard, former Secretary-Treasurer of United Steelworkers Local 789, pleaded guilty in the Criminal Court for Hamilton County, Tennessee to one count of theft of property in an amount of over $1,000 from the Chattanooga union. He then was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay a $26.50 fine. Howard had been indicted last December. The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Georgia Local Steelworkers President Charged with Theft

Steelworkers localOn March 28, William Price, former president and financial secretary of United Paperworkers International Local 1762, was indicted in the Superior Court of Dougherty County (Ga.) for theft of nearly $100,000 from the Albany, Ga.-based union. Price, 46, during 2003-09 allegedly stole funds from the local, which is a United Steelworkers affiliate. Initially, Price left the city when he heard there were arrest warrants in his name. He was later arrested, and posted bond. The indictment follows a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Steelworkers Headquarters Political Director Pleads Guilty

Steelworkers logoOn March 20, Charles Rocha, former national political director of the United Steelworkers at union headquarters in Pittsburgh, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania to embezzling $418.68 in union funds to cover expenses related to a trip to Detroit to attend an NHL Stanley Cup game. He also acknowledged responsibility for the other 17 counts of the 18-count indictment. Rocha had been indicted in September for embezzling $6,971.19 in union funds. The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Steelworkers Headquarters Staff Representative Sentenced

Steelworkers logoOn January 24, Curtis Reed, former staff representative for the United Steelworkers at the union's Pittsburgh headquarters, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania to eight months in prison for embezzling $3,694.32 in union funds. He had pleaded guilty last September after being indicted seven months earlier with another former staff representative, Robert Misuraca. Reed already has paid full restitution. The actions follow a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Steelworkers Secretary-Treasurer in Texas Sentenced for Embezzlement

Steelworkers logoOn January 4, Cleo Wilson, former secretary-treasurer of United Steelworkers Local 1856, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas to 12 months incarceration and three years of probation for embezzling funds from the Dallas-based union and then falsifying union records to conceal the thefts. She also will have to pay restitution in the amount of $29,856.19. Wilson had been indicted in June 2011, and pleaded guilty in March 2012. The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Tennessee Steelworkers Local Treasurer Indicted for Embezzlement

Steelworkers logoOn December 18, Gregory Brown, former treasurer for United Steelworkers Local 777, was indicted in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee on one count of embezzlement from the Memphis union in the amount of $6,587.57. The indictment follows a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Massachusetts Steelworkers Local Secretary Sentenced for Theft

Steelworkers logoOn December 17, Manuel Nogueira, former recording secretary for United Steelworkers Local 4-421, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts to 18 months of probation for his role in the theft of funds from the union, now based in Auburn (near Worcester), Mass. He also will have pay restitution in the amount of $9,000 and a $200 special assessment. Nogueira had been indicted back in October 2010 with three other local officials for embezzling a combined $7,000; he pled guilty in April 2011. The actions follow a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.
