Georgia Letter Carriers Local Secretary Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

On November 17, Tommy Harris, former secretary-treasurer of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1230, pled guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia to one count of embezzlement in the amount of $24,646.82 from the Griffin, Ga.-based local. The guilty plea follows a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Local Letter Carriers President in Kentucky Sentenced

On October 13, Max Messamore, former president of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 2039, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky to two years probation, fined $500, and ordered to pay $2,293.77 in restitution and a $50 special assessment for failing to properly maintain records of the Somerset, Ky. union. He had pleaded guilty in May. The guilty plea and sentencing follows a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Pennsylvania Letter Carriers Secretary-Treasurer Pleads Guilty; Sentenced

On September 6, William Wyda, former secretary-treasurer of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 253, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania to embezzling $14,081.51 from the Hazleton-based union. He then was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay a $250 fine, a $100 special assessment and $316.51 in residual unpaid restitution. Wyda pled guilty in March. The plea and sentencing follow an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Letter Carriers Treasurer in Texas Indicted for Embezzlement

On July 13, Wanda Jackson, former treasurer of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 4065, was indicted in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas for embezzling $41,246.95 in funds from the Plano (Dallas area) union. The indictment follows an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Letter Carriers Secretary-Treasurer in Kansas Pleads Guilty

On September 14, Lanny Pauley, former secretary-treasurer of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1412, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, District of Kansas, to embezzling $20,325 from the Garden City union. Pauley, 67, a resident of Garden City, during 2002-07 wrote unauthorized union checks to himself and made unauthorized charges to his union credit card. He had been indicted in June for embezzling $6,515. Sentencing is set for November 28. The indictment and guilty plea follow a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Oklahoma Letter Carriers President Charged; Pleads Guilty, Sentenced

On March 25, Robert Ramirez, former president of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 973, was charged in Canadian County Court, Oklahoma with 17 counts of uttering a forged instrument from the El Reno-based union. He then pled guilty and was sentenced to 60 days in jail. The actions follow a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Letter Carriers President in Kentucky Pleads Guilty to Theft

On May 19, Max Messamore, former president of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 2039, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky to failing to maintain proper records in connection with theft of funds from the Somerset, Ky. union. Messamore, who had been indicted in January, admitted that he willfully failed to maintain financial records to cover up his embezzlement of $2,293.77. The theft charge will be dropped once he begins serving time for records concealment. The indictment and guilty plea follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Wisconsin Letter Carriers Local President Charged with Theft

On March 3, Nancy Kumbier, former president of Branch 1144 of the National Association of Letter Carriers, was charged in Green Lake County, Wisconsin Circuit Court with theft of between $2,500 and $5,000 from the Berlin, Wisc.-based union. The complaint follows an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

New Mexico Letter Carriers Secretary-Treasurer Charged with Theft

On February 22, Kasey McCalmon, former secretary-treasurer of National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1509, was charged in the Magistrate Court for the State of New Mexico with embezzlement of $5,330.24 in funds from the Silver City union. The charge follows a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.
