Northern Illinois Maintenance of Way Secretary-Treasurer Sentenced

On March 27, Michael Schofield, former secretary-treasurer of Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Local 1046, was sentenced to eight months in prison and one year of supervised release for making false entries in financial records of the Plainfield, Ill.-based union for the purpose of concealing unauthorized loans totaling $31,850.  He also was ordered to pay $30,641 in restitution and a $25 fine.  Schofield had filed an amended plea this January following a one-count information and an original plea last June.  The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.…

Illinois Maintenance of Way Secretary-Treasurer Files Amended Plea

On January, 26, Michael Schofield, former secretary-treasurer of Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Local 1046, entered an amended guilty plea in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to embezzlement of $31,850 from the Plainfield, Ill.-based union.  In the latest action, which vacates his guilty plea last June to one count of falsifying financial records, Schofield pleaded guilty to wire fraud and making an unauthorized loan.  Sentencing is set for March 21.  The earlier and current plea follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.…

BMWE Secretary-Treasurer in Kansas City, Mo. Sentenced

maintenance of way employees _bmwe_ logoOn September 3, Jeremy Bolte, former secretary-treasurer of Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Lodge 800, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri to five years of probation for embezzling $12,500 from the Kansas City, Mo.-based union, which represents area workers for BNSF Railway.  He also was ordered to pay full restitution and a special assessment of $1,000.  Bolte had pleaded guilty in October 2014 to 10 counts of embezzlement upon being charged.  The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.…

Maintenance of Way Secretary in Kansas City, Mo. Pleads Guilty

On October 29, Jeremy Bolte, formerly lodge secretary-treasurer, was charged in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri with embezzling more than $12,000 from the Kansas City, Mo. union. He then pleaded guilty to 10 counts of embezzlement. The actions follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards. The union represents Kansas City-area employees of BNSF Railway.

Federal prosecutors had alleged that Bolte, who served in his union position during March 2011-April 2013, had sole control of union finances. Over much of this time, he wrote 18 unauthorized checks and made seven unauthorized credit card charges for the purpose of paying personal expenses. (Memphis-area) union. He also was ordered to pay a fine of $1,500 and an assessment of $100. Hull had pleaded guilty in June after being indicted in January for theft in the amount of $8,240.
