Illinois Local Secretary-Treasurer Sentenced for False Record-Keeping

On February 28, Mary Lynn Otten, former secretary-treasurer of American Federation of Musicians Local 26, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois to two years probation for filing a false financial report on behalf of the Peoria-based union. She also was ordered to pay $5,032.50 in restitution and a $25 special assessment. Otten had been charged in November and pleaded guilty immediately afterward. The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Musicians Secretary-Treasurer in Illinois Charged; Pleads Guilty

Musicians Union Local Secretary in San Antonio Pleads Guilty

MusicianJuan Rios is a lucky man, all things considered. Rios, formerly secretary-treasurer of American Federation of Musicians Local 23, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas on October 27 to embezzling funds from the San Antonio union, which represents more than 200 employees who work in various South Texas music organizations, including the Symphony Society of San Antonio and the San Antonio Pocket Opera. He had been indicted in August for two counts of embezzlement in the amount of $15,407 and one count of possession of forged securities. He faces up to five years in prison at sentencing in March.

Thief of Cincinnati Musicians Union Checks Sentenced for Thefts

On September 14, Tiffany Freeman was sentenced in Hamilton County, Ohio Court of Common Pleas to two years community supervision for three counts of check forgery against an account of American Federation of Musicians Local 1. She also will have to make restitution to the Cincinnati-based union in the amount of $2,260. Freeman, not a Local 1 employee, had been charged in December 2009 with stealing checks from its office.  She pleaded guilty this August. The actions follow an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Ohio Musicians Local Employee Pleads Guilty, Sentenced

On June 24, LaDonna Turner, formerly an employee with American Federation of Musicians Local 1 in Cincinnati, was sentenced in Hamilton County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas to three years probation and ordered to make restitution in the amount of $15,800. She also will have to undergo random drug testing. Turner had pleaded guilty on June 3 to three counts of check forgery. The guilty plea and sentencing follow an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Five Charged with Thefts from Cincinnati Musicians Union

On December 2, Tiffany Freeman, Tiesha Hamer, Lavinia Smith, LaDonna Turner and Britton Russia were charged in Hamilton County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas with forging more than $40,000 in checks belonging to Local 1 of the American Federation of Musicians. The alleged stolen amounts from the Cincinnati-based union are: Freeman, $2,260; Hamer, $749; Smith, $2,500; Turner, $15,800; and Russia, $21,309. Russia also was charged with receiving stolen property. The charges follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.
