Machinists Secretary in Los Angeles Sentenced for Records Fraud

On May 14, Maria Nunez, former office secretary for International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 1484, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California to two years of probation for making false statements in the financial records of the Wilmington, Calif. (Los Angeles Harbor area) union. She also was ordered to pay $4,868.50 in restitution and a $25 assessment. Nunez had pleaded guilty in January following a probe by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Machinists Secretary in Maine Sentenced for Embezzlement

Ryan Jones pushed his luck too far. Now he’s about to experience the downside. Two days ago, February 12, Jones, former secretary-treasurer of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge S6, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Maine to 18 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for embezzling more than $280,000 in funds from the union, which represents a large number of employees at the Bath Iron Works shipbuilding facility. He also was ordered to make full restitution. Jones had pleaded guilty last September after being indicted in August. The actions follow a probe by the FBI, the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and Bath local police.

On October 31, Stephen Royer, former secretary-treasurer of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 243, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania to a year and a day in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for embezzling $130,870 from the East Prospect (York County), Pa.-based union. Machinists Secretary in Connecticut Sentenced for Embezzlement

Andrew Thibodeau had a variety of ways of stealing. In the end, he couldn’t maintain the ruse. On October 24, Thibodeau, former secretary-treasurer for International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 1433, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut to three months in prison, to be followed by one year of supervised release, for embezzling $70,379.30 from the Kensington, Conn.-based union. He also was ordered to make full restitution. Thibodeau had pleaded guilty in April immediately following the reading of the charges. The actions follow an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and Office of Inspector General.

Machinists Treasurer in Maine Indicted for $280K+ in Thefts

It’s a good thing that International Association of Machinists Local S6 is insured. Otherwise, it might not be able to recover from losses created by Ryan Jones. Last week, Jones, former Local S6 secretary-treasurer, was indicted in U.S. District Court for the District of Maine for embezzling more than $280,000 in funds over a four-and-a-half-year period from the union, which represents workers at the Bath Iron Works shipbuilding complex. The indictment follows a joint investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Labor. If convicted, Jones faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Bath Iron Works (BIW), located along the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine, is one of the nation’s largest shipbuilders.
